The perfect power supply for smaller telescopes
Baader OTP II Outdoor Telescope Power 19W
The OTP 19W (12.8V/1.5A) is suitable for many telescopes, including the smaller and medium-sized Celestron mounts.
This switching power supply for outdoor use was specially manufactured with the needs of amateur astronomers in northern latitudes in mind. This 12.8 V/1.5 A fixed voltage power supply with reverse polarity protected protective-disconnect angled plug fits, for example, all smaller Celestron mounts (Advanced GT, NexStar SE, NexStar SLT, LCM, CPC) and offers great advantages over normal indoor plug-in power supplies at a slightly higher price. It is also suitable for all other common telescope mounts and devices with this power requirement and plug (tip positive/plus inside, plug diameter 5.5 mm)
Standard plug-in power supplies with a nominal voltage of 12 V are designed for operation "in the living room". When used outdoors, the effective voltage drops sharply at low temperatures. Even at -10°C, the voltage can drop to 10.5 V - at which point the operation of many electrical devices becomes unreliable. Telescope electronics in particular then try to compensate for the lack of voltage by drawing more power, resulting in motor synchronization fluctuations, which are usually attributed to the electronics of the mount - although the inadequate power supply unit is the actual cause.
Angled plug
The Outdoor Telescope Power II power supply unit therefore supplies a DC voltage of 12.8 V/1.5 A over the entire AC voltage range of 100 to 240 V, which is standard worldwide. Even at extreme sub-zero temperatures, the voltage cannot drop so low that the electronic components or motors of a telescope mount would be damaged. With a continuous output of 1.5 A/19 watts, there is sufficient power reserve available even at full load, even with a heavy instrument load on the mount and large load changes. In addition to the increased base voltage, the thermal operating range of -25° to +40° is optimally adapted for outdoor operation.
The power supply unit is not a tripping hazard thanks to the extended 2.5 m supply cable between the power supply unit and the angled plug, and can be conveniently stored close to the ground. The angled plug protects the telescope electronics from damage to the socket and the power supply unit from cable breakage or other damage. If the cable is accidentally stepped on, the socket is not torn out of the telescope by lateral pulling, but the connection is disconnected in a straight line at the coupling point in front of the angled plug.
Successor model to the previous 19W Outdoor Power Supply power supply unit #2457610 (no longer in production).
