  • Hoya W4 Umber Warming color correction filter
  • corrects the white balance of the image, especially bluish and greenish light
  • is particularly suitable for portrait photography
  • developed for film cameras, can also be used in digital photography

The HOYA BLUE COOLING and UMBER WARMING color correction filters are designed to correct the white balance of the image.

The UMBER WARMING series corrects the blue cast caused by cool lighting conditions, especially in shaded areas, by adding a red/orange tint to the image. Typical conditions are cloudy days or shady areas. As UMBER WARMING filters make pale skin tones appear warmer, they are particularly suitable for portrait shots.

The HOYA color correction filters were developed for shooting with film cameras, but are also used in digital photography.

Technology
The UMBER WARMING series has the gradations W2, W4, W10 and W12, which refer to a Mired Shift of +20, +40, +100 and +120 respectively.

In other words: As can be seen in the transmission curve, the UMBER WARMING series reduces bluish and greenish light entering the Lens, indirectly enhancing yellow and red colors. The higher the Mired value, the less blue and green light enters the Lens and the stronger the warming effect.

It is possible to combine different UMBER WARMING filters to achieve different values, allowing photographers to achieve almost any desired color correction.

Mired
Mired is a unit of measurement for specifying the color temperature, which is made up of the term micro-reciprocal degree. It is given by the following formula: M = 1,000,000K/T, where M is the Mired number, T is the color temperature and K is the Kelvin. As the formula is a reciprocal value, a higher Mired value means warmer light (= lower Kelvin value), while a lower Mired value means cooler light (= higher Kelvin value).

The Mired system has the advantage over the Kelvin system that the Kelvin scale is not linear. Therefore, working with mired values provides more accurate and controllable measured values than Kelvin.

Example
The current cloudy setting is 6500K, so the Mired value is 1,000,000 divided by 6500 = 153.8. Your desired color temperature is 5500K, where the Mired value is 1,000,000 divided by 5500 = 182.

The difference is approx. -28 Mired value. This means that if we want to correct the color to the film setting, we need to add +28 Mired value.
